How Can You Connect to Shirdi Sai Baba?

Deepthi K

Sai Baba is a revered saint among Hindus and Muslims alike. There are number of temples across the country dedicated to him. The temple in Shirdi is the biggest shrine built to honour him and attracts a massive crowd of his devotees every year to seek blessings.

Sai Baba was known to be tolerant and compassionate towards his devotees.

There are various ways in which you can connect and surrender yourself to the saint.

Chant His Mantras

This is undoubtedly the easiest way to connect with the divine saint. Chant the simple ‘Om Sai Sri Sai Jai Jai Sai’ mantra whenever you can. You can say this mantra anytime and anywhere.

Most devotees prefer saying this mantra silently with their eyes closed like for meditation. They also recite it 108 times in a day for at least 41 days without interruption. Followers can also chant any of his other mantras.

If you are not able to chant his mantras, you can also recite his 108 names to associate yourself with the saint. You can say his other names such as Sarvadhaara, Sai Nath and Sai Nityanandaya.

Do Good Things

Practise doing as many good deeds as you can in a day. You must also keep your mind focused on good thoughts. Avoid listening to negative talk and do not indulge in such talks yourself. Sai Baba always stressed on seeing, hearing, saying, thinking and doing good as much as possible.

Look at His Picture

Sit quietly for a while in front of his picture and gaze at it for a few minutes. Worshippers use this time to have a silent communication with their beloved saint and tell him their problems.

It is said that Sai Baba interacts with his devotees in many ways through his pictures. One way is by emanating his holy ash or udi from the picture as a blessing to his devotees.

Read His Stories

Reading several stories of the saint is yet another way of bringing yourself closer to him. You can read his books in any language. One of the most popular books among his followers is the Sri Sai Satcharitra. This book is available in English and almost all Indian languages.

Devotees usually begin reading this book on a Thursday and complete it over a week, ending it the following Wednesday.

Visit His Temple

There are temples dedicated to Sai Baba across the country. Some of them are exact replications of the temple in Shirdi. You can go to any of his temples and pay your obeisance. You can also get a puja done if you wish to do so. His temples are often crowded on Thursdays.

Devotees listen to his bhajans and also recite them in groups when they go to temples. This is believed to render a positive aura in the surroundings.

Join Sai Chanting Groups

Enrol yourself in a Sai chanting group so that you can meet with others like you. You can interact with them and share your views or exchange ideas about your experiences and explore new avenues of bonding with Sai Baba.

Engage in Social Service

Sai Baba always believed in serving and helping the needy. Engage yourself in acts of kindness and other selfless acts as much as possible. Try and do ‘anna daan’ or food charity often. This service was quite close to Sai Baba’s heart. You can also make donations such as blankets or clothes to orphanages.

Worshippers are of the belief that chanting Sai chalisa periodically has proved to be very beneficial and protects the reciter from treachery and other adversities. They also believe that his udi helps in overcoming several mental and physical ailments. While the chalisa can be recited on any day, devotees never fail to do so on Thursdays as this is the day dedicated to the saint. They also make several offerings such as flowers, fruits and coconuts to mention just a few on this day to get the maximum benefits.
