Many a time, when we are struck with bad luck, ill health, or misfortune in life or simply find ourselves in a rut, we are plagued with the question – ‘Why me?’ The answer to this question can be found in Vedic Astrology and, in one word, would be the navagrahas.
What are the Navagrahas?
According to Hinduism, the Navagrahas are the nine heavenly bodies that govern our lives here on Earth. In Sanskrit, nava means nine and graha means planet or to seize/grasp. Seven of the nine are physical entities—the Sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. The other two do not exist astronomically but are mathematical points in Vedic Astrology: Rahu and Ketu. (Interestingly, Rahu and Ketu are demons in Hindu mythology and are believed to have got themselves into this heavenly group by trickery.)
The position of the planets at the time of our birth are believed to govern how our life will shape up to be. The placement and movement of these nine planets with respect to the fixed stars in the zodiac constellations exert influence over every aspect of our lives—physical, mental, emotional, financial, etc. These influences may be positive or negative and are specific to each individual.
This is not to say that everything that happens in our life is determined by external forces and we have no sway over it. Worshipping the navagrahas in a proper and appropriate manner is believed to tone down the malefic or bad influences of the planets and bring us peace and prosperity.
Most Hindu temples have deities of the nine planets on a pedestal which are prayed to, before worshiping the other gods, to remove hindrances, and overturn bad fortune. There are even temples dedicated solely to adore and placate the navagraha deities.
